ARRIVAL OF THE ATHENIC. The Shaw-Savill steamer Athenic, from London via Capetown and Hobart, arrived in the stream at 6 o'clock yesterday morning. Captain Kempson did not deem it advisable to allow the vessel to berth in the face of the northerly gale which was raging, and consequently she was not brought alongside the wharf until 4.30 p.m. Once during the morning the big vessel commenced to drag her anchor. The gale was still at its height when the Harbourmaster brought the big ship up to the wharf without a hitch, and to the admiration of the large crowd which had gathered on the wharf.

The Athenic left Plymouth on the 18th November. A moderate north-easterly gale, with heavy seas, was encountered in the Bay of Biscay, and thence to Teneriffe, which was made on the 23rd November, moderate variable wind prevailed. Moderate to fine weather was experienced on the run to Capetown, which port was readied on the 8th December. After disembarking 25 passengers and embarking 31 passengers, the vessel continued her voyage for Hobart the same day. Strong N.W. to S.W. winds, with rough sea, prevailed to the 140th meridian, and thence to Hobart. Hobart was reached at 9.15 am. on the 27th December. A start was made for Wellington at 5.45 a.m. on the 28th December; fine weather and light to moderate N.W. winds and moderate sea prevailed until arrival here.
