The Roman Emperor left Plymouth on 22 December 1862, with 190 passengers. Favourable winds in the north-east trades. Crossed the Equator January, and experienced light winds west till we were 2degs 10min south; trades well to the southward. On the 8th February sighted Gough's Island, with moderate winds. Off the Crozet Islands on the 28th February, with wind easterly for three days. She had afterwards favourable winds until she arrived on the coast of New Zealand. Did not sight the Snares on account of heavy south-west gaies. Made the land off Otago Peninsula at about six o'clock, a.m, on the 26th instant. On Friday, the 7th, stood in towards Timaru; after this we had light winds with the northward with thick fog, Arrived off Port Cooper heads twelve p.m., on the 29th, and ran into the harbour at daylight., Sighted a full-rigged ship on the 28th instant, about 6 or 7 miles to the northward, but could no make her out on account of hazy weather. Passengers all in first-rate health, and exceedingly well pleased with the attention paid to them by the Captain and Officers. We understand they have given the Captain a very handsome testimonial signed by all the passengers.
